They are ridden hard in rough conditions, and it's not unusual for a dirt bike to hit the ground several times during a ride. Dirt bikes are built pretty tough, but unless the rider is using hand guards, the levers are often short lived. The stock levers on many motorcycles are made of cast aluminum, which is light and inexpensive to produce, but they are not very crash resistant, and bend and break easily. Forged levers cost more to produce, but are far more durable.
