They were both soaked for 100 hours at 600oF to simulate operating conditions. It is easy to see that the conventional aluminum alloy’s particles coarsen significantly. This weakening of the material’s bonds will lead to a sharp drop in piston strength. While the particles of our new aluminum alloy have only coarsened slightly, showing that they are still able to maintain a higher strength for longer periods. Additional testing shows that the biggest hardness drop occurs after 10 hours of use. Our new aluminum alloy still maintains twice the hardness of conventional alloys, even after 20 hours! This new alloy, combined with our already existing techniques of anodizing the crowns, machine smoothed heads and MOS2 coated skirts for smoother startups and break-ins, meet the demands for today's high performance engines. This high temperature resistance significantly improves fatigue strength and impact toughness, which means that we will keep you riding longer and harder than the competition. This makes SPI pistons 75% stronger than non-anodized pistons. This increases heat resistance, minimizes piston expansion and contraction and reduces the coefficient of friction. * HYPEREUTECTIC CAST A hypereutectic cast piston is a piston with increased silicon content, The end result is a piston that has an increased hardness, is more resistant to wear, and has an increased ability to withstand higher cylinder temperatures, pressure, and detonation. This helps reduce expansion from heat, makes the piston more durable and resistant to wear and allows the piston to run tighter clearances. * MACHINED SMOOTH HEADS A machined smooth piston crown should reflect combustion heat while reducing carbon buildup and protecting the top of the piston. Some tests have shown that a machined smooth head can increase HP and fuel economy by up to 6%. * MOS2 (TEFLON-MOLYBDENUM COATING) MOS2 is composed of sub-micron sized particles of solid lubricant and resin blends of solvents. This coating is rolled on, so it provides 10 times the bond strength of spray on coatings. This draws heat through piston walls and out the bottom, reduces heat and friction for added power and longevity and helps eliminate cold seizures and increases durability.
